To the Authorities of the City of Split

Proposal for shutting down Split Zoo "Marjan" and for improvement of Split Natural Science Institutions

Herewith undersigned organizations request from Split City Authorities an urgent intervention regarding necessary changes of the present shameful situation in Split Zoo and Natural Science Museum, as follows:

First, to initiate the procedure for shutting down this kind of Zoo, which is a genuine animal torture space and which does not satisfy legal standards for Zoos, does not serve educational purposes for citizens or presumed Zoo scientific intentions. Therefore, we request from City Authorities to immediately ban every new animal purchase for Zoo Marjan, and to oblige its management to take steps for moving the animals from this Zoo to other institutions during the year 2006, where they shall have a better treatment and care.

Second, that projects for relocating the Zoo to other places in the town or near the town should be cancelled, because Split really doesn't need reruns of unethical methods of keeping animals, or building too expensive Zoo-institutions according to European standards.

Third, that valuable area in which the Zoo is now located should be preserved, Natural Science Museum building next to it should be renovated as a part of the future restored natural science activity complex in Split – a complex that would include Woods Park Marjan, Oceanographic Institute, Mediterranean Institute for Life Research, Botanical Garden and other potential institutions for research, preservation and public presentation of Adriatic natural values and resources.

Fourth, simultaneously with the Zoo shutting down, a competent multidisciplinary commission should also be formed, which will propose a new purpose for it's capacity and the capacity of the Natural Science Museum building, where we think that there should be created a Scientific Centre research, improving and popularization of the Adriatic natural heritage based on modern scientific principles – including, for example, reproduction and reintroduction of some endangered Dalmatian species, multimedia informing and education, wild animals clinic, regional eco-farm elements and likewise.

Fifth, present Zoo and Natural Science Museum management should actively dedicate itself to implementation of the stipulations from this proposition, or alternatively, the City Authorities should replace it with the new management, that is, where appropriate, complete it with other persons who will, with their competence, make possible the regional natural scientific activity that Split, Dalmatia and Croatia really need and can have. To the City Authorities, we propose to establish the deadlines for implementation of the individual assignments from this proposal. We also wish to make it clear that this Coordination is ready for cooperation in all phases of its realization.

With hope that a renewed natural scientific activity will be achieved in Split with our joined efforts, we apply to you to receive this coordination delegation at your earliest possible convenience for further potential mutual agreements.
