World's first Arabic alternatives website and video launched: www.interniche.org/ar. The Arabic version of the world's largest website dedicated to modernising life science education was launched on February 22, 2006 by InterNICHE, the International Network for Humane Education. The on-line information and resources support the growing interest and opportunities in Arabic and other Muslim countries for the replacement of animal experiments with progressive, humane alternatives. The website is aimed at teachers and students of medicine, veterinary medicine and biology, and at university ethics committees, government bodies, legislators and animal protection groups.
02/25/2006 COLORADO UNIVERSITY MONKEY LAB CLOSES!
Denver - The University of Colorado Health Sciences Center decided to close its controversial monkey lab. About 40 monkeys have been used in experiments in AIDS, alcohol, and brain research. CU said most of the animals will go to the Wake Forest University's primate research facility and 10 will be given away to an animal rights group. Animal rights activists have expressed concern about the safety and security of the monkeys at the CU facility. In August 2004, they were successful in gaining the release of video from inside the lab.
02/24/2006 HIGH COURT ORDERS STATE TO ENFORCE ANIMAL RIGHTS LAWS!
The High Court on Wednesday instructed the state to enforce the law prohibiting farmers from force-feeding geese and ordered the state to pay animal rights movements' trial expenses. In August 2003 the High Court ruled that force-feeding geese was illegal because it conflicted with an animal rights law. The ruling came into effect in April 2005, but the practice continued in 24 farms across the country. Some 50,000 geese are still being force-fed, supplying luxury restaurants' demand for foix gras. Animal rights groups petitioned the High Court calling on the Attorney General, the agriculture minister and the farmers to act to effectively stop the practice immediately.

Now, the Canadian-registered ship has been forced to rest.
02/22/2006 'MIRACLE' DRUG MAY SAVE STROKE VICTIMS!
Trials of a new stroke drug at Glasgow University has revealed that it may increase a victims' chance or survival and cut the risk of disability following a stroke. Researchers found that patients given the drug had a 20 per centre reduced risk of suffering permanent disability, and trials also suggested it might reduce the risk of bleeding from clot-busting medicines given with it. The trials were sponsored by AstraZeneca.Note: over 700 treatments for stroke have been developed in animals. None work in humans.
02/21/2006 EXOTIC FISH SMUGGLED INTO AIRPORT!
Hundreds of exotic fish which were smuggled into the UK are being looked after by experts at London Zoo. Almost 1,000 Banggai cardinal fish and clown fish were found hidden in a cargo of legally imported fish which arrived at Heathrow Airport from Indonesia. About 200 of the fish died during the journey while a further 300 died as a result of their ordeal. The marine ornamental fish and a large number of stony corals have now been given a home at the Regent's Park zoo.

During the second week in February, Western Europe reported its first cases of the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of avian flu in wild birds. Across Italy, Greece and Slovenia, more than 25 mute swans died; by Valentine's Day, the virus had also been found in wild swans in Austria and Germany. Conservationists, poultry keepers and health officials are bracing themselves for more widespread outbreaks.

The Academic College of Tel Aviv-Yaffo in Israel is planning to build an animal research laboratory that will house thousands of animals who will be used for psychological experiments. While little information is currently available about the planned experiments, the lead researcher, Hanan Frenk, has in the past focused on pain and addiction research, including examining rats' responses to having their tails burned and being restrained on heating plates as they are given morphine.Planned experiments will apparently include comparing animals' responses to surgery when they have and have not been given morphine.
02/18/2006 PARIS HILTON ATTACKED BY PETA!
Paris Hilton was pelted with flour on the night of Feb 14 as she made her way to a London Fashion Week after party. She had finished walking for Julien Macdonald's show and as she made her way to the after party both she and Julien were covered in flour by PETA activists. A spokesperson for PETA said, "Julien MacDonald may have been able to ignore images of bloody skinned animals gasping for breath in the past, but hopefully a dash of flour will help him rise to the occasion and forsake fur once and for all."
02/17/2006 THE FIRST CASE OF MAD COW DISEASE IN CROATIA!
Today it is confirmed that the first case of Mad Cow Disease (BSE) has appeared in Croatia! The cow, which was on February 13 slaughtered on a family farm in Ivankovo near Vinkovci, was infected with BSE. The cow's parents were from Austria, where they first got disease.
02/16/2006 HUNTER SHOT BY CHENEY HAS HEART ATTACK!
Corpus Christi, Texas (AP) - The 78-year-old lawyer who was shot by Vice President Dick Cheney in a hunting accident has some birdshot lodged in his heart and he had a "minor heart attack," a hospital official said Tuesday. Peter Banko, the hospital administrator at Christus Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Memorial, said Harry Whittington had the heart attack early Tuesday while being evaluated. He said there was an irregularity in the heartbeat caused by a birdshot pellet, and doctors performed a cardiac catheterization. Whittington expressed a desire to leave the hospital, but Banko said he would probably stay for another week.

Washington - Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and injured a man during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, his spokeswoman said Sunday. Harry Whittington, 78, was "alert and doing fine" after Cheney sprayed Whittington with shotgun pellets on Saturday at the Armstrong Ranch in south Texas, said property owner Katharine Armstrong.Armstrong said Cheney turned to shoot a bird and ccidentally hit Whittington. She said Whittington was taken to Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital by ambulance.
02/14/2006 104 ANIMALS DIE IN THAI ZOO INTENDED FOR KENYA WILDLIFE!
A Thai zoo on last Monday opened its doors to visitors amid two blows - without the 175 wild animals expected from Kenya, and rocked by reports that 104 animals had died over the weekend. Thai media say lack of expertise on animal welfare among the Chiang Mai Zoo staff, lead to the 21 species losing at least a member each. Thai civic groups have now demanded investigations into the deaths, as well as reports that the multi-billion-shilling project has triggered illegal trade in wild animals.

Mexico City - IFAW announced that Mexico has banned the importation and exportation of primates and marine mammals. On January 26, 2006, the Decree, which modified the General Wildlife Act, was published in the Official Journal of the Federation and officially prohibited the ".Importing, exporting and re-exporting specimens of any species of marine mammal and primate, as well as parts or products made from them." The law made an exception for animals authorized by the federal government for scientific research.

Herzogenaurach, Germany - Real Madrid star David Beckham didn't stop wearing adidas Predator football boots, made out of baby kangaroo leather as a result of watching a video sent by animal rights campaigners, the sports manufacturer suggested Monday.Campaigners have applauded England captain Beckham's decision to switch to Predators made from synthetic materials but adidas, have suggested the move is because he is 'very fashion conscious'. It was initially reported that Beckham made his decision after seeing a graphic film sent by animal rights group Viva, which showed how kangaroos were shot and their babies pulled from their mother's pouch and beaten to death.

The company Gant, that has its head office in Sweden, and 226 own shops in 67 countries around the world and their products sold in estimated 4000 shops, has decided to be fur-free from autumn 2007. Gant has already placed its order for this autumn and there is some fur, but much less than earlier and from 2007 they have promised to be totally fur-free.

Bucharest (Reuters) - Former French film star turned animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot slammed Romania on Saturday for culling stray dogs after a Japanese man was bitten to death in Bucharest. The capital's mayor Adriean Videanu announced immediately after the incident last Sunday that the time stray dogs could be kept in shelters before being put down would be shortened. "When I think that the only way that has been found is to kill them, I tell you it's not nice what your government is doing," Bardot told Radio France Internationale Romania.

Rome - Industrial livestock production in developing countries often causes severe environmental damages, especially when meat and dairy factories are crowded together around cities or close to water resources, FAO warned ON February 2. In a report entitled Livestock Policy Brief 02, Pollution from industrialized livestock production the UN agency urged governments to create incentives for more environmentally friendly dairy and meat production practices.

On Saturday, Feb 4, more than 200 protesters from Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, and Germany gathered in the Zagreb city center to give their support for a legal ban on breeding animals for fur in Croatia. The protest was also supported by Croatian and Slovenian celebrities Maja Vucic, Igor Hajdarhodzic, Ela Dvornik, Jadranka Juras, and Nina Vodopivec. All Croatian televisions reported about this protest in their prime time news.

At Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, China, around 40 monkeys are involved in the experimentation. Monkey was forced to wear contact lens or to have laser operation in order to make these monkeys short sight, so the researchers can use these short-sighted monkeys to achieve their 'terific' research.
