05/31/2006 BURGEONING MINK INDUSTRY LURES FISHERMAN!

Increasing numbers of people from Newfoundland and Labrador are applying to open mink farms in the province – including a fisherman who says minks are an attractive alternative to the struggling fishery. In recent years, Scandinavian operators have opened several large mink farms in the province. Since then, more than half a dozen local operators have also applied to open new farms. The latest application comes from Alex Dicks who wants to build barns south of LaScie and start with about 1,000 minks.

Andy Johnson, a farmer in the Fenlands of eastern England, has set up a breeding program to farm crocodiles in Britain for the first time after importing one male and seven female Nile crocodiles from a farm in Africa. Johnson, 36, expects it will be at least three years before his operation produces any of the low-fat, low-cholesterol red meat that's making crocodile an increasingly popular item on restaurant menus.

05/29/2006 CATTLE TRUCKER CHARGED WITH CRUELTY TO ANIMALS!

Newmarket - An Ontario cattle-transport company and driver face charges of cruelty to animals after 15 dead cattle were allegedly found in an O'Rourke Transport truck in November. An investigation revealed the driver had driven 48 hours from Saskatchewan to Ontario with the dead cattle. Charged with four counts each of animal cruelty are O'Rourke Transportations, of Dublin, Ont., and 60-year-old David Maxwell of Brucefield, Ont. They are also charged with transporting dead animals in the same container as live animals.

05/28/2006 TENS OF MILLIONS OF BRITONS AT MAD COW DIESEASE RISK!

London, (AHN) - According to a new investigation, scientists say that about tens of millions of Britons are at risk of contracting the mad cow disease. Previously, researchers had supposed that only 40 percent of the population was at the risk of disease CJD, believed to have been passed from cattle to humans through eating meat infected with BSE during the 1980s and 1990s, says The Scotsman.

05/27/2006 CHINA PLEDGES TO STOP CAT AND DOG FUR TRADE!

The animal cruelty video that makes Heather Mills McCartney cry has finally triggered a Chinese government pledge to stamp out the trade in cat and dog fur. Scottish Conservative Euro MP Struan Stevenson, who has worked closely with Miss Mills McCartney on the campaign, has been assured by senior Chinese government officials that they are just as horrified and will act to end the practice. An estimated two million cats and dogs are being killed each year in China to fuel the trade, which is not illegal in the EU.

East Tennessee State University - James Quillen College of Medicine has joined PCRM's (Physician's Committee For Responsible Medicine) list of medical schools with no live animal labs. The surgery department will no longer use live pigs, instead, they'll use simulation technology available at their campus.

05/24/2006 COUNCIL BANS ANIMAL-TESTED ITEMS!

An animal-friendly purchasing policy which sources products not tested on animals has been put in place by Leicester City Council. It is aimed in particular at cleaning products, cosmetics and toiletries, such as soaps and bleach. The initiative also covers office products such as adhesives, correction fluid and ink cartridges. The council said it believed it was one of the first in the country to set up such a policy.

05/24/2006 VANCOUVER FIRST CITY IN CANADA TO BAN RODEO!

Vancouver City Council's decision to ban rodeo events in the city, the first of its kind in Canada, is a victory for the humane treatment of animals, says the Vancouver Humane Society (VHS). The council voted at its May 16 meeting to prohibit a number of inhumane rodeo activities, which, in effect, will prevent rodeos from ever taking place in Vancouver.

05/22/2006 DOGS AS FARM PRODUCTS?

A bill to classify dogs as "farm products" was passed by the Iowa legislature during its last session. Animal protection advocates worry that dogs being bred will have less legal protection since anti-cruelty laws for farmed animals are not as strict. The state's 400 dog breeders are behind the bill, which would give them tax breaks. Since the omnibus bill would overhaul the mental health care system, the Governor's office says it is likely that he will sign it. Opponents are pushing for Governor Vilsack to line item veto the section of the bill pertaining to dogs.

05/21/2006 PINK IN ANIMAL RIGHTS PLEA TO QUEEN!

Pop star Pink has asked the Queen to withdraw the bearskin hats worn by her Palace guards. The singer wrote a letter to the monarch at Buckingham Palace saying: "Sorry to be a royal pain, but my feelings reflect the sentiment of a new generation that respects animals." She is supporting a campaign by the animal rights group PETA to replace the hats with ones made of fake far.

05/20/2006 WILD HORSES AGAIN WIN VICTORY IN US HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES!

Washington, D.C. – The US House of Representatives on May 18 resoundingly reaffirmed by unanimous consent what it originally declared in 1971 – America's wild, free-roaming horses and burros must be protected from commercial exploitation and the cruel slaughter industry. The House again passed an amendment that prohibits taxpayer funds from being used to sell or slaughter America's wild horses.

On May 20, 2006, AFC activists will hold a demo on the main square in Zagreb in order to show the effect of Draize test and other experiments on animals exploited for a production on massive range of products in hair care, cosmetics, perfumes, personal hygiene, laundry care, snack food, paper and feminine hygiene, and even pet food. More than 150 protests will be held worldwide on the Procter & Gamble Boycott Day.

05/18/2006 HENS SLAUGHTERED IN LIMERICK!

Ireland - Six thousand hens have been slaughtered on a farm in Kilmeedy by the Department of Agriculture to test their contingency plan in case of an outbreak of bird flu. Carbon Dioxide gas was pumped into a poultry house on the farm at midday. The 6,000 boiler hens no longer laid eggs and because they had reached the end of their productive life they were deemed suitable for this exercise by the Department of Agriculture.

05/16/2006 MILITARY TESTING ON ANIMALS DOUBLES IN THE UK!

The numbers of animals used for experiments by the military has doubled in five years. The Ministry of Defence statistics show that the defence laboratory at Porton Down is now using more than 21,000 animals a year for testing. The types of animals used for vivisection include mice, monkeys, pigs, cows and sheep. Figures released by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) show that in 2000, Porton Down used 11,985 animals in its tests. Last year, that figure had risen to 21,118.

05/14/2006 1600 SHEEP DIE AFTER GRAZING IN GENETICALLY ENGINEERED COTTO!

Over 1600 sheep apparently died this month in India after ingesting genetically engineered (GE) cotton. The massive deaths occurred after several days of grazing in fields where Monsanto's Bt and herbicide resistant spliced varieties of cotton were planted. Scientists from India's Centre for Sustainable Agriculture are calling on the government to launch a study into the impacts of GE cotton toxins.

Kidapawan City - Animal rights activists may cringe at it. But North Cotabato provincial veterinarian Enrico Garzon said his office had no choice but to kill close to 300 stray dogs using a 'gas chamber' after their owners failed to claim the animals in three days.Garzon said their action was in line with their continuous campaign to eliminate the proliferation of stray dogs in major streets and towns of the province.

De Wildt, South Africa (AFP) - South Africa proposed a ban on 'canned hunting', in which captive animals are killed, as well as hunting with bows, traps and dogs, in an effort to clean up the lucrative business. Environmental Affairs Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk unveiled a set of guidelines for the hunting industry, which generates some 25 billion rand (3.2 billion euros) a year in South Africa, drawing game hunters from Europe and the United States.

05/02/2006 HUNDREDS OF DEAD DOLPHINS!

Zanibar, Tanzania - Scientists tried to discover Saturday why hundreds of dolphins washed up dead on a beach popular with tourists on the northern coast of Zanzibar. Among other possibilities, marine biologists were examining whether U.S. Navy sonar threw the animals off course. Villagers and fishermen were burying the remains of the roughly 400 bottlenose dolphins. The animals may have been disturbed by some unknown factor, or poisoned, before they became stranded in shallow waters and died, said Narriman Jiddawi, a marine biologist at the Institute of Marine Science of the University of Dar es Salaam.

05/01/2006 RESTAURANT FINED FOR LOBSTER DISPLAY!

Rome (Reuters) - An Italian restaurant was fined 688 euros (479 pounds) for displaying live lobsters on ice to attract patrons, in an innovative application of an anti-cruelty law usually affecting to household pets. A court in the northeastern city of Vicenza ruled the display was a form of abuse dooming the crustaceans to a slow death by suffocation.
