03/31/2005 CRUEL TASER TESTS ON PIGS AT UW-MADISON!

University of Wisconsin-Madison Professor John Webster plans to conduct an experiment in which live pigs will be shocked with Taser stun guns. Using a $500,000 taxpayer-funded grant provided by the U.S. Department of Justice, Webster will attach electrodes directly to the pigs' skin and implant catheters near their hearts to measure the voltage of the Taser shocks. He also plans to use a "super-Taser" device to induce heart arrhythmia, as well as applying overdoses of cocaine to the pigs, ostensibly to mimic the effects of fleeing human suspects high on drugs. What makes this experiment even more outrageous is the fact that similar Taser studies have been conducted with pigs (and dogs) on at least four other occasions. There are ample human data available for study, as these stun guns have been widely used by law-enforcement agencies for several years.Experts in the field agree that the best way to determine whether Tasers are safe is to study the data gathered from the many cases in which people have suffered adverse affects or died as a result of Taser shocks.

OTTAWA - Canada said on Tuesday it would allow 320,000 young seals to be killed this year and launched an unusually strong attack on activists who promise to boycott Canadian seafood products in a bid to stop the hunt. But pictures of hunters clubbing defenseless animals to death have turned the event into an annual public relations nightmare for the government. The two-month hunt, which starts this year on March 29, takes place on ice floes off the Atlantic coast where the seals give birth. Canada says the hunt is humane, but animal rights groups insist many animals are skinned alive and die in agony.

03/06/2005 PAMELA ANDERSON ASKS RUSSIA'S TOP DESIGNER TO GO FUR-FREE!

Internationally renowned television and film star Pamela Anderson - on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment Animals (PETA) and the Moscow Animal Rights Centre VITA - has sent a letter to Russia's top fashion designers, urging them to stop using fur. Enclosed with the letter is PETA's shocking video narrated by Anderson and dubbed into Russian by VITA and PETA - in which she describes the horrific suffering of animals caught in traps and raised on fur farms as graphic images of the animals' painful lives and deaths appear on the screen. Although Anderson has written to North American designers who use fur and even traveled to Paris to personally show the video to French designers, her letter marks the first time that a mailing of this type has been sent to Russian designers."It amazes me that some designers still turn animals into fashion victims", says Anderson. "I've written to them all to say, 'Foxes and chinchillas are anally electrocuted, beavers are drowned in underwater traps and minks are injected with weedkiller, all for a tacky coat that makes women look like Bigfoot!'"

03/05/2005 CATTLE VIRUS THREATENS BULL RUNS!

The Pamplona bull run and hundreds of smaller Spanish festivals are threatened this year by a rare cattle disease, blue tongue virus, which has led to government restrictions on the movement of livestock in Andalucía, Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha. Bullfight organisers have asked the government to exempt bull running because of the bull's special status in Spanish culture. But the agriculture ministry insisted that the restrictions would remain in place as long as necessary. They would be reassessed at the end of this month. Its spokeswoman said: "It's still early to talk about what might happen in July. We have to hope the situation improves, and it is already changing a lot. But our first priority is the health of livestock."

03/04/2005 SIMON COWELL: FUR-WEARERS OUT OF TUNE!

Contestants on the new season of American Idol would be well advised not to wear any fur now that judge Simon Cowell is the newest voice in PETA's anti-fur campaign. A smiling Cowell appears in a new PETA ad holding a dog and saying, "If you wouldn't wear your dog, please don't wear any fur." Cowell wants consumers to know that each fur coat, collar, or cuff means that animals have been cruelly trapped, drowned, or beaten to death in the wild or gassed, strangled, or electrocuted on fur farms. Fur is a relic of prehistoric times, when it was the only thing to keep primitive people from freezing, whereas today's lightweight synthetics, such as Gore-Tex, are much more versatile and efficient at keeping people warm. Faux fur or no fur is what's in tune with current concerns about treating animals with respect.

03/03/2005 NEW PIRAEUS INCIDENT!

In an unjustified seizure of rescued animals from Crete, fifty eight dogs, property of the animal rescue group Arche Noah Kreta were illegally detained at the port of Piraeus near Athens on the 28th Feb 2005. Arche Noah say the animals were taken from them and transported to an unknown location by opponents of animal welfare organisations. The main cause of this meddling is led once again by none-other than the infamous Mrs. Ioanna Garagouni. In a similar scenario to the Athens airport incident last year, Garagouni brought along Greek TV News Alpha to cover the "event". It seems that neither Garagouni or Alpha TV have learnt the lessons of last years entirely inaccurate reporting and probing of innocent animal rescue groups transporting strays to new homes in North and West Europe.
