03/31/2004 UK FIRM STOPS EXPORT OF LIVE ANIMALS!
A Kent shipping company has decided to stop the live export of animals from Dartford. Over the past few months, Dartline had sent trial shipments through the Thames Europort in the town amid anger from animal rights campaigners. But on Tuesday the company said its decision to stop had been based on "commercial considerations." Kent Action Against Live Exports said its campaign of action against the firm had achieved the result. In a statement, Dartline said: "Following recent trial shipments of live stock through Thames Europort, Dartline has decided not to take further bookings. Although a legal trade, this decision has been based on commercial considerations as it is considered that the trade is incompatible with the cargoes carried on behalf of other customers." Campaigners opposing the shipments had mounted a number of impromptu protests to vent their anger at the company, which included blocking the entrance to the port at various times of the day and night. They also blocked the company's telephone lines, emails and faxes.
03/31/2004 WHEN ANIMAL ACTIVISTS ATTACK!
Animal rights activists have announced a boycott of the Australian state of Tasmania, threatening a local economy which is heavily dependant on tourism. The boycott has been announced by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), a global organization with over 800,000 members, including pop star Chrissie Hynde and the Liberal Democrat Environment spokesperson, Norman Baker. It is protesting about the felling of native forests to clear the way for plantations, a move that has been described by a senior Australian politician as "an ecological disaster." In the last year alone, Tasmania cleared over 60 square miles of forest, containing some of the oldest and largest trees in the world. PETA, however, is more concerned that when an area is cleared, it is planted with seedlings and then sown with compound 1080, a poison which kills animals that may feed on the seeds. "The animals' crime is to have been born in biodiverse old forests, now being replaced with plantations with all the biodiversity of a car park," said Ms Hynde. PETA will now encourage its members to avoid travelling to the region and to refrain from buying Tasmanian goods. Given that 50% of the Tasmanian economy is based on tourism, it is thought the impact could be very serious.

As the row grows over the import by the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) of enough 1080 poison to kill up to two million animals and Heaven knows how many people, and concerned citizens turn to overseas experts for help, the skeletons are starting to fall from the cupboard. Going back to the NIOSH/EPA Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances, 1980 edition, sodium monofluoroacetate was not only investigated for possible use in chemical warfare, but was actually developed by the Nazis and tested as a potential method of killing Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, the mentally retarded, etc. The name Compound 1080 was not bestowed upon it until the one-man Tull Chemical Co. began making it in 1956. Details appeared in the 1946 edition of the American Journal of Public Health. Apparently the poison "worked quite well when administered at 5 milligrams per kilo of body weight," but Zyclon B was easier and safer for the death camp staff. How, one wonders, could Hitler's poison come to South Africa so easily and in such large quantities. "The scandal of Hitler's poison reveals everything that is wrong with nature conservation in South Africa," says Chris Mercer of the Kalahari Raptor Centre. "The whole structure is defective. What the country needs is a centralised, streamlined organization supported by competent scientists and with a proper chain of command. Instead look what we have. We have 10 different autonomous bodies - DEAT (Department of Environment and Tourism) and the nine Provinces - each doing exactly as they please. In nature conservation, each province is a sovereign nation state. This means that decision making devolves to the lowest denominator in the system - the petty provincial nature conservation official. In military terms, decisions which should be made by generals are being made by NCO's, while the battle cry of DEAT is "don't bother us, that's a provincial matter."
03/29/2004 PETA UPS ANTI-KFC CAMPAIGN WITH "BLOOD"!
NORFOLK, Va. - The animal-rights activists who once suggested Ronald McDonald was a bloody butcher are going after Colonel Sanders, contending cruelty is the "secret recipe" for KFC's fried chicken. Starting next month, Norfolk-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals plans to hand out "Buckets of Blood" to children outside KFC restaurants and at schools near the restaurants. The buckets are part of PETA's campaign against what it says are farming and slaughter abuses by KFC's suppliers. The 5-inch-tall, red-and-white striped containers mimic KFC's buckets. But instead of fried chicken, each is filled with items including a bag of fake blood and bones, a bloodied plastic chicken and a cardboard caricature of a blood-spattered Colonel Sanders holding a butcher knife toward a terrified-looking chicken. Labels on the bucket proclaim, "Shhh! The 'secret recipe' in this bucket of body parts is ... cruelty" and "The Colonel's secret recipe: live scalding, painful debeaking, crippled chickens." KFC spokeswoman Bonnie Warschauer initially said, "We don't comment on the corporate terrorist activities of PETA. They are corporate terrorists and just like the United States government, we will not negotiate with corporate terrorists." Warschauer added that "PETA has totally crossed the line of free speech and acceptable behavior" and "all they want is a vegetarian world. They misrepresent the truth about our responsible, industry-leading animal welfare standards," she said. "We're committed to the humane treatment of chickens." PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said the campaign is "about getting KFC to stop supporting abuse of chickens that shocks the conscience of any kind person."

BRUSSELS - The European Union agreed new rules late this week to reduce the number of dolphins and porpoises killed after becoming entangled in fishing nets. Fisheries Ministers spent hours haggling over the details, delaying the ban on the use of driftnets to catch salmon in the Baltic Sea by a year until 2008. Ireland, holding the rotating six-month Presidency of the EU and chairing the talks, welcomed the agreement. "Too many dolphins perish each year as a consequence of fishing programs," said Irish Fisheries Minister Dermot Ahern in a statement. "Today's outcome delivers a balanced package."

MOSCOW - Russian customs seized a truck heading for China after agents uncovered a load of animal parts, including nearly 800 severed bear paws prized for exotic dishes, Russian media reported recently. NTV television showed footage of agents unloading bags on Friday full of the paws, which fetch high prices in Chinese restaurants. It said the illicit cargo, concealed beneath piles of used car batteries and boxes of food, also included assorted antlers, pelts of fur-bearing animals, and dried sea cucumbers. Poaching is rampant in many parts of Russia, particularly in poorer Siberian and far eastern regions. Twelve years after the collapse of Soviet rule, widespread poverty often overshadows ecological and environmental concerns, a low priority in public opinion and in government policy. Travis Burnham, a teacher at Gray-New Gloucester High School, plans this spring to offer students an alternative to the classroom procedure regarded by some as the high point - and others the low - of high school biology. MIAMI (Reuters) - More than 60 bottlenose dolphins have died in the waters of the Florida Panhandle in the past nine days under mysterious circumstances, U.S. marine researchers said on Friday. The National Marine Fisheries Service said its preliminary tests found no evidence of red tide, a harmful alga that has been blamed in the past for massive die-offs of endangered manatees, in the waters of St. Joseph's Bay, where most of the dead dolphins have been found.
03/25/2004 COURT RULING MAY END LIVE CATTLE TRADE!
Exports of live cattle from Ireland may come to an end following a Supreme Court decision to allow the only shipping company involved in the trade to abandon its service. The Pandoro company has been trying to get out of the business since 1997 for "commercial and reputational reasons." The company has been under fire from animal rights groups in Britain, who have branded live exports as inhumane. The Supreme Court has lifted a temporary injunction imposed at the request of a farmers' group, preventing the company from ceasing operations. The court ruled that the association had failed to fully pursue the matter. The live cattle export trade is worth around E200m a year. The Irish Farmers' Association claims that ruling will have devastating consequences for about 100,000 Irish cattle farmers who will have no other means to ship live exports to markets abroad.

The scandal of how an organization calling itself the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) is promoting the use in South Africa of a poison so harmful that it has been banned in the USA for the last thirty years, continues. On 702 Radio last Sunday afternoon, Dr. Nick King of the EWT explained to Tim Neary how farmers have a "toolbox" of problem animal control methods and that 1080 poison was merely intended to be "another tool in the toolbox." He was so matter-of-fact about it, and glossed over the moral issues so smoothly and effortlessly, that few listeners would have realized the true horror of what he was accepting as normal.
03/22/2004 NAWA FILES COMPLAINT AGAINST ANIMAL EXPERIMENTERS!
The Norwegian Animal Welfare Alliance (NAWA) has filed a complaint against animal experimenters who had performed elektroejaculation on a sedated wolf without a permit. Video evidence shows that the wolf was given an electric shock over 50 times without successfully producing an ejaculation. Experiments on wild animals involving chasing, capturing and marking is on the rise in Norway. For some time NAWA has been concerned about the ethical aspects of wildlife research. Now the first evidence supporting NAWAs concerns has been presented to the police.
03/21/2004 MORE WOLVES AND BEARS TO BE TARGETED IN ALASKA!
The Alaska Board of Game, which ended a two-week meeting on March 10, voted to expand aerial hunting of wolves to two more areas, which would include killing 140 to 180 wolves in the Kuskokwim region and 100 wolves in Cook Inlet, a total of about 20,000 square miles of land. The game board also approved a plan that could allow them to use similar methods to kill grizzly bears. Bear "control" plans may also include trapping, baiting, killing of sows and one-year-old cubs, and the sale of bear parts. (Defenders of Wildlife)
03/20/2004 GERMAN JEWS ATTACK VEGETARIAN AD CAMPAIGN!
BERLIN (Reuters) - An animal rights group said on Wednesday it would go ahead with a controversial advertising campaign that likens the slaughter of animals to the murder of Jews under the Nazis despite threats of a legal challenge. Paul Spiegel, president of the Central Council of Jews, said he would ask prosecutors to raise charges of "inciting racial hatred" against vegetarian group People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) for the advertisements called "Holocaust on a plate." PETA campaign coordinator Matt Prescott said he was aware of the council's views, but added: "We are not willing to end the campaign." He said he himself was Jewish. The posters, due to be displayed in Stuttgart from Thursday and in 11 European cities at later dates, show pictures of battery hens packed into cages next to historic pictures of emaciated Jewish inmates in Nazi concentration camp bunk beds. Stuttgart prosecutor Eckhard Maak was quoted Wednesday as saying PETA should think twice because German law foresaw fines or up to five years in prison for anyone found guilty of belittling or denying the Holocaust. Maak said if the campaign went ahead "then you can expect the police won't shut their eyes," according to an advance copy of an interview due to be published in Thursday's Berliner Zeitung newspaper. Spiegel earlier told the newspaper the Jewish council would press charges if the campaign was launched. He has urged PETA to drop the "disgusting" adverts, saying they were "a violation of human dignity, especially of the Holocaust victims." PETA officials say the posters are designed to raise public awareness of what they call the maltreatment of animals before they are slaughtered.

People should avoid milk and cheese as much as tobacco, a scientist has said. Professor Jane Plant says there is strong evidence that dairy products promote breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. Speaking at a lecture on diet and cancer, she said: "My advice is don't have any dairy products in any form whatsoever. Just cut them out completely." Professor Plant's best selling book on links between dairy products and breast cancer, Your Life In Your Hands, was published last year. Her new book, Prostate Cancer - Understand, Prevent and Overcome - comes out in May. Professor Plant made the dairy connection after being given two months to live with advanced breast cancer which had spread to her lymph glands. She wondered why it was that in rural China, where hardly any dairy products are consumed, rates of breast cancer were so low. After giving up all dairy foods herself she noticed a remarkable change. Within five weeks the huge tumour in her neck began to itch, then soften, and finally shrivel away. More than 10 years later at the age of 60 she is clear of the disease - although she has had breast cancer five times. Her investigations highlighted the role that milk chemicals such as insulin-like growth factor one (IGF-1) played in cancer. IGF-1 is naturally present in cow's milk but levels are increasing as a result of selective breeding by the dairy industry. There was a clear association between levels of IGF-1 in a man's blood and his PSA level. PSA, or prostate specific antigen, is a protein marker which increases in cases of prostate cancer. Excess calcium in milk and dairy products also depressed the activity of vitamin D, which protects against breast and prostate cancer, said Professor Plant.

Wilson and George Schaller, and biologist and well-known TV host Jeff Corwin, have sent a letter to the Bush administration opposing its plan to allow commercial international trade in endangered species for the first time in thirty years. If adopted, the new policy would allow hunters, skin traders and circuses to import any of the more than 500 foreign species protected by the Endangered Species Act, including Asian elephants, cheetahs and orangutans, under the pretense of "enhancing the survival" of the species. Compassion in World Farming Trust announced this week amazing results from a national opinion poll, showing that people who eat meat every day are more likely to consider themselves overweight or obese than those who eat meat once a week or less. The poll results have just been announced and show that 46% of respondents who eat meat everyday consider themselves overweight or obese, whereas, 60% of those who eat meat once a week or less consider themselves the correct weight. The campaign was launched by Joanna Lumley, together with a host of experts, including leading environmentalist Jonathon Porritt. The campaign brings together latest research showing that the global increase in meat consumption is having devastating effects on impoverished farmers in developing countries, on global hunger, on the environment, on farm animals and on our own health. Britain is at the centre of a thriving trade in illegal ivory, a business that is likely to boom if, as expected, limited sales of stockpiled tusks are approved next week, environment activists say. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) is due to agree the one-off sale of a total of 60 tonnes of ivory from Botswana, Namibia and South Africa to Japan, but activists fear the sale will trigger an explosion of poaching. "The UK has very good enforcement of wildlife laws and yet the trade in illegal ivory here is flourishing," a spokeswoman for the International Fund for Animal Welfare told Reuters on Thursday. "Any relaxation of the international ban on sales of new ivory will be used as a cover for the killing of more elephants to fuel the illegal trade," she added. IFAW said a two-month undercover investigation it carried out of antiques traders in London and several other cities across Britain found thousands of ivory objects openly for sale either without the necessary papers or with forged documents.

LONDON (Reuters) - Global hamburger giant McDonald's latest line in healthy looking salads may contain more fat than its hamburgers, according to the company's Web Site. McDonald's, plagued by health critics and flattening sales, has launched the biggest change to its menu in 30 years with its plans to get into the multi-million pound prepared salad market. "You can choose your salad, topping and dressing. You can mix and match to suit your diet and lifestyle," said a McDonald's spokeswoman. However, consumers hoping to lose weight by switching from burgers to salads may be disappointed, according to the Interactive Nutrition Counter on the McDonald's Web site. For example, on the new menu to be launched at the end of this month, a "Caesar salad with Chicken Premiere" contains 18.4 grams of fat compared with 11.5 grams of fat in a standard cheeseburger. The British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) told Reuters it welcomed the salad menu but warned that salad dressings bought in fast-food outlets or supermarkets could be very high in fat and calories. BNF said the recommended daily fat intake for men is 95 grams per day and for women 70 grams per day. McDonald's has 1,235 restaurants in the UK and serves three million customers per day.

TOKYO - Two dead crows found near a poultry farm in western Japan have tested positive for bird flu, raising concerns that the spread of the disease may be difficult to control, the Agriculture Ministry said. One crow that tested positive was found adjacent to a farm that has been affected by bird flu and the other about 5 miles away, a ministry official said. The official said it was likely the crows had been infected by chickens at the farm, which became the third poultry operation in Japan to be declared affected by bird flu on February 27.

The video documents the inadequacy of Canadian legislation in protecting farm animal welfare during long distance transport. In Europe such scenes are considered completely illegal and would result in severe penalties. Among the shocking incidents painstakingly documented on video by investigator, Lesley Moffat, of the European animal welfare organization Animals' Angels include: * Cattle trucked for 67 hours from Alberta to a Quebec slaughterhouse with water provided only once. * Pigs trucked 24 hours straight from Alberta to an Oregon slaughterhouse in 36-degree heat without water. * Pigs trucked 35 hours straight from Alberta to California without water in 38-degree heat and heavy stench of ammonia. * Injured and lame animals being transported. * A cow incorrectly stunned and hoisted by one leg at the Quebec slaughterhouse while still conscious. * Pigs being electric prodded on their face and bled on top of still conscious ones waiting their turn in the slaughter pen.

NAIROBI - Kenya urged African countries to stick by a 15-year global ban on the ivory trade, which it says has saved the elephant population across the continent from further decimation. The ivory trade was prohibited worldwide in 1989 after the African elephant population halved to 600,000 in just over a decade.
03/08/2004 ITALIAN ANIMAL RIGHTS LAW PUTS LOBSTER OFF THE MENU!
Residents in the prosperous Italian town of Reggio Emilia were outraged after its council adopted an animal rights bylaw that bans boiling live lobster as "useless torture." Supporters of the move said that it gave animals - both companion animals and those in the wild - equal rights to man, but local companion animals' guardians criticised it as terrifying political correctness. Under the bylaw, "sociable" birds such as budgerigars and parrots must be kept in pairs. Birdcages must be at least five times the bird's wingspan in width, and three times in height. It also makes it illegal to keep a goldfish in a round glass bowl.

Apparently, the current aerial gunning of wolves in Alaska is not enough for some trophy hunters and their supporters in the state government. The Alaska Board of Game, which previously approved the aerial killing of wolves, leading to at least 91 wolf deaths already, is meeting to hear a number of proposals, including some that call for aerial gunning and bait-and-shooting of grizzly and black bears, as well as the selling of bear parts and the killing of bear cubs that are still with their mothers. In medical research filmed secretly by anti-vivisection campaigners in Cambridge in 2002, marmoset monkeys had the top of their skulls sawn off and part of their brain sucked out or injected with toxins. The purpose of these hideous experiments was presumably to provide knowledge that might help in treating brain-damaged humans, but it is questionable whether making animals suffer in this terrible fashion is the most effective way to cure human disorders. As Wendy Higgins, of the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection, said about the Cambridge experiments, monkeys do not have the same brain diseases as humans. Yet they do have much the same capacity for pain, and it is this shared vulnerability that makes using them in medical research so clearly wrong.Animal experimentation is the practice of imposing severe suffering on other species for human benefit. It works scientifically only to the extent that animals resemble humans, but it is precisely the many similarities between animals and humans that condemn it morally. Inflicting brain damage on captive monkeys in order to advance medicine is no more defensible than using helpless humans for the same purpose. In a truly civilised society all such experiments would be prohibited.

03/04/2004 USA POLICE BUST UP NEARLY NUDE PROTEST!
CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts - Police have arrested six shivering protesters after they braved cool temperatures and staged a nearly naked pillow fight outside Harvard University to promote animal rights. The five women and one man, members of the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, were arrested on criminal misdemeanour charges, said police spokesman Frank Pasquarello. "This is nothing compared to what the animals go through," protester Karla Waples, wearing nothing but pasties to cover her nipples and a pair of panties, shouted to reporters as she was led in handcuffs to a waiting police van. Before their arrest, the activists chanted "Love in, Fur out" as they frolicked on a mattress outside the Ivy League school. A large crowd, including several blue-collar workers, watched the protest with broad smiles across their faces. "We thought we'd seen it all, but this is a first," said Scott Nelson, an electrician on his lunch break. It was the latest in a string of publicity stunts by the group, whose supporters include former "Baywatch" star Pamela Anderson. Just last month, PETA members staged a topless Valentine's Day protest outside luxury leather goods maker Louis Vuitton's flagship store on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

03/03/2004 UVA MED STUDENTS WILL NO LONGER USE DOGS!
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - The University of Virginia says it will no longer use dogs to teach lifesaving procedures to medical students - a practice criticized by animal rights activists, local residents and some students.The university, which made the announcement Thursday, had used canines in medical school training for at least 20 years. Officials said about 100 healthy dogs per year were put to death after being cut open in class.Third-year medical students used the dogs to learn how to insert chest tubes, open an airway by cutting into the windpipe, insert IV needles into veins and remove the spleen. Dr. Arthur Garson, dean of the medical school, said three of the four procedures could easily be taught on computerized mannequins.However, university officials said they would not rule out the use of other animals to train students. A decision on that issue is expected by the end of June.

Animal studies are often of poor quality, and their contribution to clinical medicine requires rigorous evaluation. Pound and colleagues analysed 25 systematic reviews of animal studies and found only six investigating how animal research had informed clinical research.
