07/31/2006 PFIZER: ONE OF 14 WORST HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATORS!
Pfizer named as one of the 14 worst corporate human rights violators of 2005. From the report: 'Pfizer is one of the largest and most profitable pharmaceutical companies in the world with revenues of $52.5 billion in 2004. In addition to Viagra, Zoloft, Zithromax, and Norvasc, Pfizer produces the HIV/AIDS-related drugs Rescriptor, Viracept and Diflucan (fluconazole). Like other drug companies, they sell these drugs at prices poor people cannot afford and aggressively fight efforts to make it easier for generic drugs to enter the market. They have even cut off drug shipments to Canadian pharmacies that sold Pfizer drugs to patients in the United States for costs more affordable than those offered in US pharmacies.
07/27/2006 ANIMAL EXPERIMENTS RISE EXPOSES GULF IN ATTITUDES!
The number of experiments on animals in the UK rose by 41,300 last year, highlighting the ideological divide between campaigners and scientists. While some hailed a 'golden age of medical discovery', activists criticised the government's 'permissive, head-in-the-sand attitude' to testing. The 1.4% increase on the previous year was revealed in Home Office statistics. Primates, dogs, cats and horses were used in less than 1% of the 2,896,000 procedures, with most using rodents (85%), fish (8%) and birds (4%). However, the use of primates rose 11% to 4,650 procedures on 3,120 animals. But while scientists and charities asserted the medical need for testing and stressed context, five members of the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection dressed as animals at a mock funeral procession at the Home Office.
07/26/2006 TENS OF THOUSANDS OF ANIMALS KILLED IN ARMY MEDICAL TESTS!
Hundreds of thousands of animals are killed or injured in defense-related experiments in Israel, according to data the Defense Ministry has given to the Israel Society for the Abolition of Vivisection (ISAV). Data on experiments described as 'classified' indicate that they used tens of thousands of mice, thousands of rodents, dozens of monkeys and hundreds of pigs. The Defense Ministry said the defense-related experiments using animals will continue as long as there are no alternatives.
07/25/2006 KFC FACES CULTURAL BACKLASH IN CHINA!
Beijing - Kentucky Fried Chicken is facing a backlash in China after the company used a long-dead Chinese vegetarian hero to promote a chicken sandwich. The Independent reported that KFC ran an ad that featured an aging Taoist monk proclaiming the new chicken burger to be a 'masterpiece.' The ad has drawn anger as the monk represents Fu Qingzhu, who, in the 17th century, helped defend China against invaders.
07/24/2006 NAMBIAN SEAL CULL 2ND ONLY TO CANADA'S!
Cape Argus - More than 60,000 seals are being culled in Namibia, sparking an international outcry from conservation bodies and animal rights activists, which have called the hunt genocide. The killing of 60,000 Cape fur cub seals and 7,000 bulls until November is the second largest seal harvest in the world. The largest annual harvest is in the Gulf of St Lawrence in Canada, where 325,000 were culled this year.
07/23/2006 UH FINED FOR DEATHS OF DOLPHINS AT LAB!
The University of Hawaii is facing a big fine from the federal government for allegedly mistreating four dolphins that died at its dolphin lab within two and a half years. UH is still deciding whether to pay the fine or appeal. For nearly 30 years, animal activists have complained that UH's dolphin lab at Kewalo Basin was too small and unsanitary for the dolphins.
07/22/2006 BRIGITTE BARDOT MAY MOVE TO SWEDEN OVER ANIMAL RIGHTS!
French film star Brigitte Bardot has told Sweden's prime minister that she may move to Sweden because she was ashamed of her native France's efforts to stop a Swedish law aimed at improving conditions on the country's own mink farms. The longtime animal rights activist was protesting a move by France to block, by way of the European Union, a Stockholm initiative to improve conditions on Swedish mink farms.

The Humane Society has become the exclusive sponsor of 'Project Runway' first season winner Jay McCarroll's debut fashion line. McCarroll, who won Bravo's design competition back in 2005, will premiere his fur-free collection in September at NY's Fashion Week. While Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez may beg to differ, Jay says 'With so many fun and fashionable alternatives, there's no reason to use fur.'
07/19/2006 STUDY SAYS MAD COW EPIDEMIC MAY BE INCUBATING IN THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE!
A new study in the Lancet medical journal (UK) suggests that variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), the human variant of Mad Cow Disease, may not peak in the human population for several decades, by which time many thousands of beef eaters and hospital patients that have received tainted blood transfusions could die. The study shows how Kuru, a similar fatal brain-wasting prion disease in New Guinea, has been found to have an incubation period of 35 to 41 years. Researchers suspect it could be longer for vCJD because the infection is transmitted between species, from cows to humans.

Chandler - Covance Inc., a global biotech company that has drawn protests for its use of animals in drug testing, filed plans with Chandler on Friday afternoon to build one of its largest facilities in the country. Since the company purchased 38 acres in the Price Road Corridor near Germann Road for $8 million last year, city officials have been inundated with e-mail protests from animal rights activists worldwide.
07/17/2006 LEFT TO DIE IN TEXAS!
Nearly 150 pigs recently perished while confined inside overloaded transport trailers at the Texas Department of Agriculture's (TDA) Livestock Export Facility near the Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport. Traveling from Ohio to Mexico, the pigs were abandoned at the international inspection point without food, water or relief from scorching temperatures. By the time the trailers were opened days later, almost 150 pigs were found dead. The excuse offered by the TDA: lack of proper paperwork allegedly preventing them from unloading the pigs!

At the World Merino Conference in Perth, Australian Wool Innovation is due to announce that the Italian company will increase its Australian superfine merino wool order to 4 million kilos clean over the next two years.

Scientists want the sale of fresh chicken in supermarkets banned in a bid to curb our worsening campylobacter epidemic. Rates in New Zealand have nearly trebled in the past 15 years to the highest in the world, three times that of Australia, and 30 times higher than the United States, according to a new Otago University study. Reported cases of campylobacter - which causes stomach cramps, nausea and diarrhoea in humans - were 1425 in May, nearly twice the 748 cases reported to authorities in May 2005.

The switch to synthetic balls was announced on June 28, 2006.

Pamplona, Spain - An American man was partially paralyzed after a mock bullfight following the first running of the bulls Friday in Pamplona, and seven other people were hospitalized after being gored or trampled by the massive beasts. Danger is what draws throngs of revelers to Spain's most famous festival each year, and danger is what they got in the narrow streets of this ancient Spanish city.
07/09/2006 SLAUGHTER OF FISH IN CROATIAN NATIONAL THEATRE (HNK) WAS STOPPED!
Animal Friends are thankful to Vitomir Marof, soloist in HNK and to Ana Lederer, commissary in HNK, who had stopped fish slaughter by Slovenian project group Via Negativa during their performance for Eurokaz last week in Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. For their performance, members of the group intended to stamp and harass alive fish but thanks to decisive reaction of Vitomir Marof, who refused to sing in the play for protest, Ana Lederer forbade animal killing in HNK.
07/09/2006 WHALE SHOT IN FRONT OF TOURISTS!
Eager Norwegian whalers didn't do much to boost the image of their country's tourism industry this week, when they gunned down a whale before the eyes of tourists out on a whale-watching expedition. Around 80 tourists had paid to go out on a whale-watching boat from Andenes, in northern Norway. While the tourists were admiring one of the great mammals of the sea, a Norwegian whaling boat approached and shot the whale in front of their eyes. As if the shooting wasn't enough, the tourists were also treated to the sight of another whaling boat hauling one of their own dead whales up on deck.

One of the most eminent musicians and poets of today, on July 6 gave a concert in front of 3,000 fans in Zagreb. The interesting thing about this concert, except from frantic Croatian public, is that all five members of the Morrissey's band wore Animal Friends Croatia's white and black T-shirts with the message in Croatian 'Meat is Murder' during the whole concert! Morrissey himself had PETA's sticker on his temple with the animal rights message. In cooperation with the organizer of this concert, Animal Friends Croatia participated in announcing his concert and promoting Morrissey as an animal rights advocate.

The Minister of the Environment and Spatial Planning of Slovenia, Mr. Janez Podobnik, has issued a decree by which approximately 100 brown bears should be killed in 2006. The Minister argues that there are too many bears in Slovenia and that the size of population of the animal has to be balanced with the environment.
07/05/2006 JUDGE STEPS IN TO SAVE THE WHALES!
A federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order Monday to stop the US Navy using sonar during training near Hawaii because it might hurt or even kill whales and other marine mammals. The US District Court Central District of California said the Natural Resources Defence Council, which sought the injunction, offered 'considerable convincing scientific evidence' showing military sonar can harm marine animals.

07/02/2006 ACTOR JOAQUIN PHOENIX IS SPEARHEADING A NEW CAMPAIGN TO BAN THE CHAINING OF DOGS IN CALIFORNIA!
The star has teamed up with animal rights group People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals and penned letters to every top California politician, asking them to support a new bill, which would make attaching chains to dogs a state offense. In his heartfelt letter, Phoenix points out, not only does chaining lead to lonely suffering for dogs, it also presents a very real danger to people, especially children who wander into the area where dogs are kept chained.
